Good point Getreal, but I view the system as we are not voting for folks we think are doing a good job, most times we are given a choice. In this region it seems we have one political party and no chance for opposition. That's really where the system fails. And once elected these folks are controlled by the party. K. Gillibrand had the screws turned on her by the downstate democratic party on the issue of guns (by no means an endorsement).'What do we do now?
The powers of president that I have listed are the actual powers granted to him by the constitution. They are not my opinions. Congress has all of the real power to control the direction of our nation. As I said we all re-elect our local congress people term after term feeling that they are doing a great job for our local region, the same as everyone from other regions feels. These jobs were not meant to be for life when the founding fathers drafted and ratified our constitution.
"the president has the chance to steer the process and he has the power of the office to influence the country. And he also has the last say, as in the Keystone pipeline. He vetoed that much to the dismay of many voters." Tiredoftax Congress can over ride a President's VETO if they have a spine. We have not been better of with Dummicrat or Repukecain in office. If either party did such a great job, why does that office flip flops between both parties? If Romney becomes president (heaven help the dogs), who do you think will benefit? No the SPCA, not the middle class, not those less than minimum wage earners. I think he needs to be strapped to the roof of a car for a 12-hour ride! He did not think then, and sure is not thinking now!
As a business owner are you not taking a risk and hiring people, would it not be prudent to pay them well to have their loyalty so they sell more or produce more for you the business owner?
MrBoB51- generally the working environment has become 1 step above slavery. The average employer pays employees just enough so they won't quit, and the average employee does just enough to not get fired. To quote a very successful businessman " Overpay your people - it instills loyalty"
It's obvious drugsrus never owned a business. Let me say it again, people go into business to MAKE money just as people work for other people to MAKE money. Pay scales are tied to skill, ability and ROI(return on investment) not some silly Utopian dream of equal outcome. You want to 'share the wealth'? Then share the risk, put YOUR money and future on the line for the goal of individual financial success. You will be singing a different tune. Absent of that, let me know when any of you secures a job from a poor person.
8.50 an hour for a 40 hour week still won't get a good honest worker ahead in the real world, and people wonder why a highschool grad lives at home with parents for so many years because of the cost of living such as rent, car insurance utilities ect. How can a young person get started at any minimum wage with our wonderful government increases
prices do not have to increase just because wages go up. How about tha commissioned sales force doing more selling , which means more product out the door increasing company income, allowing the company pay scale to increase. Unless the owner tends to be the greedy type who simply sees "more for ME". Successful companies really don't need unions or minium wage decrees. The sad thing is -- there really aren't too many of those around.
Raising the minimum wage sounds like a good idea, but mostly it would reduce jobs and raise prices. If I have a business and my payroll is 150,000 then I can hire 10 people at the current wage but one less if you raise the minimum by 10% or more. Also I would have to raise prices to keep in business. Then I may not be able to compete with the big boys and have to close shop. Then all 10 people lose their jobs. Since most people are employed by small businesses, this is a real concern. What we really need to do is have more better paying jobs in the $15-25 hourly range. In this area, if you want that kind of money you have to commute. I know because I do along with many others. I like living in the area but working here just doesn't pay the bills.
My adult son worked his "way up" in a local nationally owned lumber yard to a position of authority & trust, for that his wage was increased to an hourly rate that allowed him to afford a slum dwelling. He is bright, intelligent and has an excellent work ethic. My dad (his grandfather) was better off in 1950,I did the research. He was also a local blue collar worker. Thankfully my son got a much better paying job because if his work ethic and skills. Yet it is far too easy for his previous employer to replace him, because of the low standard set by the current minimum wage. Corporate profits are at all time highs despite our "poor" economy. Something is not "adding up" , dare it be corporate greed fostered by "super pacs" that can buy an election?
Keep in mind that this argument is predicated on you believing the premise of a minimum wage being necessary in the first place. In 1938 the Govt, thru the Fair Labor Standards act set the price on what a (non-farm, non-supervisory) job was worth. Say what you want but I'm more inclined to determine someones value to my Company by THEIR skills and abilities, not by some politicians arbitrary decision. Too many Americans have not paid attention to the slow Statist/Progressive creep who's adherents are patiently instituting their brand of Utopian society. This issue is another wake-up call to citizens, if only we all would listen.
So you are saying that with a Republican as president we would still have an albatross of a healthcare bill, a huge failure in all government investments in green technology and all of these other "issues"? I believe that the final say is HUGE! The media behind you is HUGE and having the Office of president HUGE!
Would this change in minimum wage also change the now minimum wage of $5.00 for waiters/waitresses, hairdressers ect.? Would it change the student wage and the wage paid to college students under their Federal Work Study grant?
operative word being chance, steer, influence, and guide. doesn't sound like a whole lot of power there when it comes to domestice issues. The Presidents main job under the Constitution is Commander in Chief. Revamp congree from top to bottom!!!
Taxedtoomuch, the president has the chance to steer the process and he has the power of the office to influence the country. And he also has the last say, as in the Keystone pipeline. He vetoed that much to the dismay of many voters. There are many ways that the president can guide the direction of the country but lately it is a one lane highway on the one way street to the destruction of the USA!
Minimum wage was never meant to be what now is called a 'living wage' ie. provide for a family of four. The vast majority of min. wage earners are teenagers. You want a living wage?? Get off your stupid phone, shut off your computer and game station, get off your lazy****and get educated or learn a trade. Quit whining and DO something unique, like contribute to society.
Taxedtoomuch, I have said that all along but the select few believes the President or the Governor is the lone one to blame....they forget all those boneheads they keep re-electing time and time again are the real issue. Funny how fast Kristen Gillibrandt learned the ropes so fast she is like Pelosi's twin. I guess the brain washing has been improved for new members. Merger Fulton and Montgomery co departments together and we can weed out the Fat from the top for once! Get rid of the $80,000 Steadmiser and we could use that money for the lower income. Maybe we should cap how much the BOE can pay for a Superintendant of schools. We have schools below par and we shell out $100,000 plus on a salary for what???? First improve the schools then you get the big pay. What a concept! Actually working to get the money!
Many people here give way too much credit to the office of president for our problems. The real perpetrators are the senators and representatives that we elect term after term We believe that our person is doing great as do all the other districts and as a collective whole, it is congress who is ultimately responsible for the state of our nation. TERM LIMITS are the answer.
is the Commander in Chief of the armed forces. He or she has the power to call into service the state units of the National Guard, and in times of emergency may be given the power by Congress to manage national security or the economy. has the power make treaties with Senate approval. He or she can also receive ambassadors and work with leaders of other nations. is responsible for nominating the heads of governmental departments, which the Senate must then approve. In addition, the president nominates judges to federal courts and justices to the United States Supreme Court. can issue executive orders, which have the force of law but do not have to be approved by congress. can issue pardons for federal offenses. can convene Congress for special sessions. can veto legislation approved by Congress. However, the veto is limited. It is not a line-item veto, meaning that he or she cannot veto only specific parts of legislation, and it can be overridden by a two-thirds
What we need to do is to add another tax to things like the "STUPID" tax on snow machines. For those that cannot read "NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES ALLOWED" on the Rail trail. We could tax the creator of the sign as well since it’ is and engine and not a motor! Same tax on people that cannot park between the lines. Same tax on those that run red lights, stop signs, pass on double solid lines into on coming traffic. The list is endless and in this area, this would pay for the wage to be greater than $12.00.
